NANNA PAUSE
Finest Double Face Coats
The German born, Paris-based designer Nanna Pause first encountered double-faced fabric on a beautiful 1960’s reversible tweed coat that was handed down to her by her mother. In her over twenty year career in fashion working at Christian Dior, Jil Sander, and Louis Vuitton, Pause learned firsthand of the painstaking work that goes into creating this very special type of cloth.
Double-faced fabric has twice the warps and wefts of normal fabric and is constructed in two layers. Mounting these garments requires time and expertise— taking up to seven times longer than that of a common product. Along each seam and edge the layers are first separated, then a sequence of difficult manipulations is performed by hand along those seams and edges. Nanna Pause coats are made in the north of Sicily by an expert in the craft. There, in the valleys of the Nebrodi Mountains, the tradition of women’s needlework—particularly embroidery—has been kept alive and is now the key ingredient in Nanna Pause’s wonderful coats and jackets.
The intention in Nanna Pause’s small and focused collection is that the pieces become “beloved companions,” built to last and evolve.
