Paul-René Tamburro

Paul-René Tamburro is a member of the Vermont Abenaki Artist Association and the Nulhegan Abenaki tribe in Vermont. An artist and educator, Tamburro works in the tradition of Eastern Turtle Island, drawing on the perspectives of Elders and cultural stewards who shaped his early life. His practice is rooted in the continuation of Eastern Woodland art—an effort to preserve not only form, but spirit, in a world where language and tradition are often at risk.

The Work

Tamburro apprenticed in chasing and repoussé metalwork in the 1970s, developing a deep command of silver and copper. His pieces are informed by a lifetime of work within Indigenous communities and a heritage that is Amerindian, European, and African. He is an enrolled member of the Nulhegan Abenaki of Vermont and connected to the Shawnee Piqua through marriage.
