ABOUT THE MAKER

Escovaria de Belomonte

Escovaria de Belomonte is a family-run atelier with over 90 years of history in the art of brushmaking. Founded in 1927 by António da Silva in Massarelos, Porto, the workshop began with industrial brooms and brushes made entirely by hand. In 1953, it moved to Rua de Belomonte 34, where it expanded into personal-use brushes—still crafted with the same manual precision.
Today, the atelier is led by the fourth generation, Sérgio Silva Rodrigues. Born in 1993 and raised around design and craftsmanship, Sérgio brings a renewed vision to the workshop. Though brushmaking wasn't part of his original plan, he returned to the family trade in 2012, drawn by the process and purpose behind the work. “The passion came once I started making brushes myself,” he says.
Each brush is made using traditional hand-filling techniques, honed over decades. No shortcuts. No mass production. Just honest craft built to last—for shoes, hair, dishes, even mushrooms.
Escovaria de Belomonte remains the only atelier in Portugal still making brushes entirely by hand.
